Hiba (Asuhi, Asunaro)
(Thujopsis dolobrata), hiba, asuhi, asunaro, false arborvitae, hiba arborvitae. The common Japanese name asunaro refers to the phrase: “ Tomorrow it will become a hinoki”, because its form resembles a young hinoki cypress, with a densely foliated conical shape.
It is a medium to large evergreen tree of the cypress Family (up to 40m) with a characteristic red-brown bark that peels in vertical strips. The leaves are fleshy and glossy green with white bands below. Its scent is similar to pineapple. Woody cones appear at the end of branches.
Hiba is drought-sensitive and loves high rainfall and moist soils. The wood, which is durable and scented is valuable, making it one of the Five Sacred Trees of Kiso.
