'Myrddin and Chwyfleian - visionary songs'

A book of original poetry and art.

Hardback, 144 pages, 6" x 9". (15cm x 23cm)

29 original black and white illustrations

More than fifty poems accompanied by many original artworks derived directly from ancient visionary Iron Age Celtic art.

This book is inspired by the Myrddin poems recorded in "The Black Book of Carmarthen" - a small, hand-written manuscript compiles by one person some time in the 13th century. "The Black Book" is a collection of much earlier writings in the Welsh language that were considered important to the bardic and heroic traditions of the British Kingdoms in what is now Wales, Northern England and Southern Scotland. "The Black Book" includes several long poems that that evoke some of the numinous energy of the figure from Welsh myth known as Myrddin, later becoming the Merlin of the Arthurian Cycles. My poems here focus upon a mysterious presence that appears in some of Myrddin's poetry. Sometimes translated as 'sybil', 'prophetess', 'pale stranger', 'whiter phantom', Chwyfleian. ('khh-wuv-lay-an') seems to be a female manifestation of visionary inspiration who appears to Myrddin and brings visions or fore-seeings.

"Chwyfleian tells me a tale

that makes me shake."

The word 'chwyfleian' is related to other Welsh words to do with agitation, vibration, irritation, rapid movement, and might suggest that the seeress used rocking or shaking to achieve altered states of awareness, much like the Nordic 'seithr'. Welsh 'awenydd' are also recorded in similar trance-like agitation as they made prophetic and divinatory statements.

I have written, drawn, designed and produced this book myself to hopefully widen the appreciation of the old Welsh traditions of the bards, and to produce a work of art worthy of our ancestors. I hope it will reach those who wish to explore the nature and relevance of the Myrddin energy

Every tree expresses in its form the energies of balance and harmony with its surroundings. Each species does this in differing ways, and it is this that can help us when we are lost and out of harmony with our lives. We simply need to remind our deep mind of what is required and then relax into a more natural state of relaxed being.

The Tree Spirit Oracle took as its starting place the Celtic Tree Oracle, but greatly expanded the trees used, and completely re-examined the practical symbolism, visual patterns and energy signatures of each tree.

Each tree is represented by a symbol, representative of the dynamic, core characteristics of that tree.

There are two ways in which the book can be used as an assessment and divination tool:

the book comes with two wooden dice that can be used to generate a random number that links to a specific tree. That page is then looked up and the information consulted.

There is a key page with all the tree symbols on can be looked at to see which symbol 'jumps out' in response to the question.

Each tree is explored on every level in the book so that the oracle can be of most use, whatever the situation.

The information for each of the 75 trees consists of:

the visual symbol, or 'Tree Sprit Key'

image: phrase or mnemonic to help visualise the qualities of the tree for divination.

issue: a summing up of the divinatory meaning.

keywords

situation: a brief description of how the energies may be manifesting

guidance: an examination of how the energies may be appearing in the questioner's life and what should be considered.

positive attributes: a list of possible positive meanings

negative attributes: a list describing how the energies may be appearing if not being dealt with appropriately

personality: a suggestion how the tree energy may represent a certain type of person

the tree: background information on the species of tree, its habits etc.

healing energy: how the tree can help with imbalances in life.

'The Tree Spirit Oracle' was original conceived as an oracle card set and contains details about card layouts at the back of the book, but there are other ways of using these layouts, as described in the text. For those who do not wish to use cards, or who cannot afford the card set (as it is completely hand-produced, one set at a time to order, and so cannot compete on price with commercially printed divination sets), this book and dice is a complete and flexible divination system in its own right. It is also a very good introduction to the healing potential of trees and to 'Tree Spirit Healing'.
