Myrtle-leaved Oak (Shirakashi)
(Quercus myrsinifolia), shirakashi, shirakashi oak, bamboo leaf oak, Chinese evergreen oak, Chinese ring-cupped oak, is an evergreen oak tree growing to 20 metres (66 ft) tall. It is native to east central and southeast China, Japan, Korea, Laos, Northern Thailand, and Vietnam.
Quercus myrsinifolia is a small, domed, evergreen tree, occasionally multi stemmed. Its leathery, hairless leaves are narrow, lanceolate, up to 12cm long, dark green above and slightly downy beneath. The newly emerged leaves have a purple/ bronze colour. The bark is dark, pinkish grey, smooth, occasionally with thin orange furrows. The flowers appear on young shoots, with 2 to 6 being borne on a slender stem . The fruit is an acorn borne in clusters of 2 to 6 on a long stem.
This tree is not grazed by rabbits or deer.
