Japanese Cherry  (Sakura)

(Prunus serrulata), Japanese cherry, sakura has well over 200 cultivars in Japan. Cherry blossom has long been a potent symbol here - both as a national emblem and as a symbol of the ephemeral beauty of the world. The souls of the dead are sometimes equated with cherry blossom, particularly of warriors.

Cherries begin to blossom first in Okinawa in January, reaching Kyoto and Tokyo about the end of March or beginning of April.

Amongst the many varieties is Prunus “Tai-Haku”, an ancient Japanese cherry that had become extinct in Japan, reintroduced by a single tree found in a garden in Sussex, England. This variety has single white flowers. Known as the great white cherry, it grows to 12m (40ft).

Key idea: "unity".  Main colour:  pink
