St. John’s Wort (H. perforatum), is a member of the large Hypericum Family and is native to Europe and temperate Asia. It is an upright, woody, perennial with small, oval leaves. Around midsummer the yellow flowers open, which yield a bright red pigment when crushed. A plant of the sun, it has been revered for thousands of years as a protector from evil and a driver away of negative influences. It is an effective anti-depressant, nerve tonic and immune system booster. Taken before sleep it can alter awareness making it easier to experience the dream state and lucid dreaming. The solar partner of the lunar dream herb, mugwort.
