COPPER BEECH (Fagus sylvatica var. purpurea)

Key: depression.

Copper beech was first recorded as growing in Switzerland in 1680 and later also arose at least a couple of times in Germany. Its form and habit is identical to the common green variety except that its foliage is a deep reddish-purple colour. Copper beech is mainly found as a garden or park tree where its colour stands out dramatically amongst the surrounding vegetation.

The emotions are energised, but in a positive way. Anger and repressed, or otherwise inappropriate, emotions are expelled in a non-aggressive, positive way. There is a greater understanding and acceptance of the individual’s deep unconscious emotional tendencies and instincts – the patterns of behaviour that automatically trigger in certain situations. Emotional difficulties  with relationships are  eased. Copper beech helps to see each situation as it is, rather than being viewed through a distorting screen of past experience.

There is the possibility to relieve depression  and bring a deep, enlivening sense of peace and detachment from worries as stress is lifted from these aspects of the Lung meridian.

The emotional body becomes better balanced giving a sense of easiness and humour. There is a more relaxed ability to accept and express lovingly who one is and what one feels.

There is a greater positive receptivity; an ability to be peaceful without a need to do something else. It can be useful in depression or when there is need of greater emotional independence or detachment from an emotional situation.

At extremely fine, universal levels this tree helps to sharpen intelligence, clarity and the sense of joy.

Signature: The purple-red leaves appear sombre and weighty yet allow a red light to filter through. This feels quietening and energising. Magenta, pink and red are the qualities of this essence together with an indigo-purple.

Comment: The colour of a plant’s leaves is an indication of the energies that it does not absorb from sunlight. Hence green leaved plants reflect green light favouring the reds, yellows, blues and violets. Copper beech reflects dark reds and blue-blacks. It absorbs almost the opposite frequencies of light to green leaves absorbing much more of the mid-spectrum range. Energetically and metaphysically, copper beech is thus an interesting tree spirit to explore.
