ENGLISH ELM (Ulmus procera)

Key: Enthusiasm

There are many varieties of elm with very similar forms. Each tends to have quite clearly defined locations. English elm predominated in the hedgerows of the Midlands and southern England. The Cornish elm is either native or an early introduction and remains dominant in the far west. The Wheatley or Jersey elm is a variety of the smooth-leaved elm found on the Continent and more frequent in the eastern and southern counties of England.

The English elm was characterised by its tall, narrow crown with dense foliage, growing close to the boughs. It could reach a height of 120 ft. (36m). All elms, except wych elm, sucker freely and even with the continuing ravages of Dutch elm disease hedgerows still contain many young elms ,easily identified by their vigorous growth at a regular angle of about 45 degrees to the main trunk and the clearly alternate large leaves. The flowers are small and appear on the  twigs early in the year well before the leaves appear, giving the whole tree a reddish tinge. The ripening seed cases are easily seen as a vivid light –green mass of leaf-like ovals hanging in great profusion from the branches. It is thought by some that the distribution of English elm suggests it was brought into the country by the pre-Celtic peoples.

The essence of elm brings the ability to organise fine levels of information or energy in a way that can be easily understood. It allows a greater ability to have an overview of any situation, giving discrimination and sufficient detachment. There is also the possibility of knowledge from the beyond.

When there is a lack of perspective and loss of control – such as in hysteria – the regulating Circulation-sex  (Pericardium) meridian is given greater stability. Practicality dominates over flights of imaginative possibility.

The Large Intestine meridian is also affected with an increased ability to cleanse and remove foreign materials by establishing correct sense of personal boundaries, increased sense of purpose and direction. Clarification of who one is allows identification of what one wishes to distance oneself from.

Elm brings the ability to experience and understand others on a level of feeling. Emotions are stabilised. There is an increase in equilibrium and compassion and the ability to give and receive love. It  also becomes possible to determine more accurately the validity of personal actions, balancing the qualities  of conscience and guilt feelings.  Many chakra s around the heart and abdomen are brought into balance.  The brow chakra, too, is boosted creating a dynamic calm that allows experience of fine perception and transcendence  of normal states of consciousness.

Confusion, oppression, fatigue are reduced making decisions easier.  Elm is a useful essence to use to re-energise the mind when fatigue d and balance the heart when feeling drained or over-emotional.
