GREAT SALLOW (Salix caprea)

Great sallow, also known as goat willow, is a small, many-stemmed tree that can grow to 50 ft. (15m). It is the well-known “pussy-willow” with silky, silver buds on the female plants in early spring. Like all willows, male and female flowers appear on separate trees. Great sallow is one of the earliest willows to flower in early spring. The male flowers are grey becoming yellow when fully ripe with pollen, the female flowers are greenish white. A very common tree in Britain, great sallow colonises waste ground, especially damp places, woodlands, scrub and hedgerows. It will also spread onto drier soils. The bark contains tannins and salicins used in medicine (as an astringent and painkiller). The wood is light and soft. A natural hybrid, the Kilmarnock willow, is a “weeping” variety found in 1840 in Scotland.
Great sallow, like others of the willow family, is an energiser. It works to stimulate and motivate the mind in practical, dynamic ways. Both the solar plexus chakra and the eighth chakra located above the head are activated, and this creates a link with the soul through which the conscious awareness can expand. The result is a greater understanding of life purpose that leads to a release of tension. This in turn allows a greater energising of the whole body.
Extensive tension or rigidity in the knees can ease which creates a better link to earth energy.
The other major influence of this essence is to bring a profound calm and balance into the whole system.
The heart and Heart meridian are stimulated for greater understanding of others, and the relationship od self to others. There is a greater appreciation of the needs of others and a balanced acceptance of personal responsibility and willingness to help, without compromising personal space. Great sallow will help those who are either too involved or those who avoid relationships.
All the different aspects of the subtle self are brought into a greater harmony, and this particularly helps to remove self-defeating behaviour patterns.
The mind, the whole conscious levels of awareness and the higher spiritual energies are brought to a place of calmness and balance from which personal power and steady growth can evolve.
