LEYLAND CYPRESS (x Cupressocyparis leylandii)

Key: Freedom.

This tree is a natural cross between the Nootka cypress fertilised by a Monterey cypress, which happened in Welshpool in 1888. In some respects, therefore, this is a truly native species, having its genesis in Wales! Leyland cypress quickly became popular as a hedging plant, combining the rapid growth of the Monterey and the hardiness of the Nootka. The trunk has numerous short branches from base to crown, both usually invisible through the thick, evergreen foliage. Small yellow male flowers appear in spring at the branch- tips. Female flowers are green and ripen later into small, green cones.

Ther is a sense of expansiveness and freedom. Where there has been anxiety and worry regarding the future, and where there is a lack of confidence and faith in positive outcomes, this essence re-energises the Spleen meridian to regain composure and trust.

It is possible to let go of unreal possibilities and delusions. A more stable and positive attitude is created with forgiveness, tolerance and compassion for oneself grows, together with an increased sense of humour.

All this creates a sense of freedom and a space that feels comfortable. It helps to clear the head and shakes off muzziness. A useful essence for those who are frightened of being on their own or who are uncomfortable in their own company.

Signature: The structure of trunk and branches are kept hidden. The tree is planted as a fast-growing screen against noise, wind and to maintain privacy. Establishing personal boundaries. Both parent trees grow on the Pacific coast of America in spacious, wild surroundings.

Comment: It is interesting to note that this spontaneous generation of a new species occurred between two different, unrelated genera of tree at a time when the Victorian Age was fully occupied with the exploration of the “green” energies of freedom, boundaries, discipline and power at the level of the individual, the society and the nation. 1888 was also the year Mme. Blavatsky published “Isis Unveiled”.

It is well worth getting to know this tree in its natural form if possible. We are so used to seeing it only as a square-cut wall of feathery green that it is easy to forget that Leyland cypress is a magnificent tree in its own right.

All the cypresses have potent scents of great variety, some peppery, some sweet and so on. Next time you pass a leylandii hedge take a deep breath in and acknowledge the spirit presence – just because something is common and useful there is no need to ignore it.
