WAYFARING TREE (Viburnum lantana)
Key: Far memory
Named thus by Gerard in the sixteenth century because of its prevalence along the lanes of southern England, its older name is “hoarwithy” (“white plant stem”). A small shrub tree, it is easily identified from its strong-looking opposite leaves on short, stout stems. In May and June a dense umbel of white flowers appears on each branch-ending, ripening to shiny black berries. Hoarwithy prefers dry alkaline soils and is rarely found in the North of Britain.
This essence links to specific memories of the place where it is growing. It recognises and calls up similarities of circumstance and patterns that are repeating in the present. Indirectly this can give access to the mechanisms for remembering personal past existence s. Wayfaring tree may also help with other temporal sensitivity as in psychic archaeology and psychometry. Working with the tree in situ can be very revealing as to a view of times past.
The heart energies are cleared and lightened of emotional burdens such as fear, jealousy, envy etc. There is an ability to focus on choices for life direction and growth.
The etheric body is strengthened, re-establishing its boundaries and independence. This creates a protective space that encourages health of the physical body.
An increased balance of internal energies and polarities that supports information to flow in from other dimensions. Protection against negatively and pollution. Integration with planetary awareness es. The essence is supportive of changes in spiritual life.
Signature: found on old paths and uplands-where our ancestors established themselves first. Strong, heart-shaped leaves. Extreme flexibility of stems-even greater than hazel. “Tying things together”.
Comment: I was hunting for wayfaring tree for ages before I found. In our part of Devon it can’t be found, though twenty or thirty miles away it is pretty common. Finally I made an essence from trees growing high on the Hampshire Downs. I love this plant-simple, strong and unobtrusive. A few days after making the essence I was walking in an Exeter Park very familiar to me and there it was in a hidden border – a large wayfaring tree in full flower!
