WHITE POPLAR (Populus alba)

White poplar originates from the southern parts of Europe and western Asia. The date of its introduction to Britain is unknown but white poplar has certainly been planted as an ornamental tree since the 16th century. It rarely grows above 65ft (20m) and tends to have a leaning trunk and an asymmetrical crown. Like all poplars the leaves tremble in the breeze, and the almost white undersides create a silvery shimmering. The bark too, is easily identified: the upper trunk is silver with dark lozenge or nail-head markings. Both male and female flowers are woolly catkins. The male are crimson and the female are green and appear on separate trees before the leaves appear.
White poplar essence brings the security from which to grow outwards, express oneself and find new ways of being and thinking. Once there is established this sure foundation in confidence and self-worth it becomes easier to explore many different possiblities.

Signature: The alternation of dark green upper leaves and silver-white lower surfaces; the dark lower bark and the patterned upper trunk, both suggest a transformation of emotional states.
